Oh! New Cam!

Postby Tim_Wood » Wed Dec 16, 2009 11:39 pm

Hi folks!

I got a Canon 7D last week. Bit of a change from my 30D!

8fps is scary - and the build is far better!

I'm getting to grips with the autofocus system - bit complex, but fast!

Haven't got anything worth bragging about, so i thought i'd post an obligatory cat photo!

(Sig 70-200 f2.8 ) Processed via the beta version of adobe camera raw in CS4.

Looks like something worth bragging about. Good to see you still think of us.

Hey Mr B! - Of course I still think of you guys at NDPS!! This is the only forum board which I post on and the only one I care about! I look forward to the day I bump into you taking photos somewhere!

I think the 7D demands decent glass. My Sig 70-200 f2.8 isn't as sharp as it was on my 30D, by my 30mm f1.4, 50mm f1.8, fisheye and my 10-20mm really shine on it. Focus on the lens' has been spot on, so my fears about the Sig's compatibility have been quashed!

The speed-light trigger is just like the Nikon system and very welcome. It works really well indoors, but outdoors is a little tricky. I think i'll use my radio triggers for that!

Oh, and a 2gb card only holds about 90 images in RAW only. I might have to invest in a 8 or 16gb Extreme 3. (gulp!)

I'm looking forward to some snowy pics tomorrow!!

Hmm? is that a bit of a dig at my shutter pressing rate?

My health is stopping me wandering around for long so my rate has plummeted to almost zero at the moment, so no snow images from me.

Hi everyone,

Well, 6k frames in and I am very very pleased with this camera body.

The difference between this and my 30D is huge, and reading the manual several times is a must.

The auto-focus is snappy, locks on in poor-light far faster than my old body, and camera noise is much better controlled at ISO's up to 3200.

Build is more 'robust', the grip is very comfortable and the screen is super clear and sharp - a massive improvement from the older screens.

The only issue I have found is that you need good glass to get the most from the sensor. Hence, I have now got an 85mm f1.8 and the 135mm f2 L. :)

It is interesting what you say about the lens performance. I have a Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 zoom, which gave very good images on my 10.6Mp Pentax K10D, but does not perform as well on the new 14.6Mp K-7. By comparison, my Pentax full frame lens, the 28-105 f/4 power zoom gives very crisp images. It does look like the higher pixel count sensors do need better lenses. I was asking on the AP forum, how does one tell which are suitable, but it seems to be a game of chance to some extent.

I found that my 70-200mm f2.8 Sigma EX (non-DG, full-frame) wasn't up to the task - on my 30D it had good sharpness and the images looked great from the LCD, where-as on the 7D, they were sharp and in-focus, but seemed soft and lacked 'pop'. Hence I sold the lens, and got the 135L.

All my other lens' (Tok10-17mm fish / Sig10-20mm f4-5.6 / Sig30mm f1.4 / Can50 f1.8) are fine.

If anyone hasn't used the 85mm f1.8 / 135mm f2 L - you'll be amazed. Autofocus was rapid and the images, even wide open are in a different league.
